Health & Safety Executive (HSE) Inspection September 2013

The HSE carried inspections at 21 businesses along Argall Avenue during September 2013. Ten Improvement Notices, requiring certain improvements to be made within a given period, and nine Prohibition Notices, which stop dangerous work activities immediately, were issued by Inspectors.

The issues found included poor machinery guarding, spraying lead-based paint, unsafe work at height, use of chemicals and safety-critical equipment such as compressors and hoists not being examined by a competent person.

Some businesses were skeptical about the remit of the HSE believing they are unreasonably pedantic in order to generate revenue from fines. Others welcomed their presence as they actively want to ensure best practice within their operation.

Overall, we aim to ensure that standards within the BID are exemplary and have supported a number of Health & Safety course for BID businesses and their employees.
