Over 1,000 women marched through the streets of Walthamstow to celebrate International Women’s Day

Cedars_Ave_Suffragettes womens dayHundreds of people across the borough celebrated International Women’s Day on Saturday 8th March 2014 as they marched through the streets of Walthamstow.

About 1,000 women and girls took part in the events, which started with a re-enactment of a 1910 Suffragette march from Cedars Avenue to the town hall.

The Wonderful Women’s Walk, organised by Walthamstow MP Stella Creasy, and escorted by police, saw traffic come to a standstill as hundreds walked in solidarity waving banners, shouting slogans and wearing colourful home-made sashes.

Following the march, hundreds of women gathered in the assembly hall as Ms Creasy officially opened the Waltham Forest Women’s Network (WFWN) event.

A food festival, dancing and workshops continued throughout the day before the grande finale fashion show during the evening.
